Barley & Adzuki Water to Drain the Damp (Earth)
If you’ve ever felt puffy, heavy-limbed, and vaguely swollen after a run of humid days or too much takeout, Chinese wellness has a name for it — damp — and a drink for it.
This is that drink. Pearl barley (薏米, yì yǐ rén) and adzuki beans (红豆, hóng dòu) are simmered into a clean, almost neutral water that you sip through the day instead of reaching for another soda. No sugar, no milk, no ceremony. It is the pantry equivalent of opening a window.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup pearl barley (coix seed / job’s tears)
- 1/3 cup adzuki beans
- 1.2 L water
- A small piece of dried tangerine peel (optional, for digestion)
Method
- Soak the barley and adzuki beans in water for at least 2 hours, or overnight.
- Rinse and add to a pot with the 1.2 L water.
- Bring to a boil, then lower to a gentle simmer for 40 minutes — the beans should be soft and the water faintly cloudy.
- Strain. Drink the liquid warm or at room temperature through the day.
- You can eat the soft beans too, or leave them out — the water is the point.
Why it works
Barley and adzuki are the workhorses of the “drain dampness” tradition in Chinese diet therapy — both appear in classic texts as foods that move water and lighten the body without harsh purging. In five-element terms this is Earth-phase maintenance: the spleen runs on warmth and dryness, and a damp spell makes it sluggish. This water tips the balance back.
When to reach for it
- Puffy eyes, soft swelling in the hands or ankles.
- That “lead blanket” fatigue on muggy days.
- After a stretch of heavy, greasy, or late meals.
- As a daily swap for sugary drinks during humid seasons.
Important: traditionally coix/barley is avoided in pregnancy. This is a dietary ritual, not a treatment — if you have kidney issues, are pregnant, or take medication, check with your practitioner first.
