Longan & Lily Tea to Settle a Busy Mind (Fire)

There is a particular kind of tired that sleep doesn’t touch — the kind where you’re in bed but your brain is still filing paperwork. This is the tea for that.

In the five-element system, the Fire phase rules the heart, and in Chinese medicine the heart is said to “house the spirit” (shen). When the heart’s blood runs thin — from overwork, worry, or simply a long stretch of doing — the spirit has no soft place to land, and you lie awake. Longan (桂圆, guì yuán) and lily bulb (百合, bǎi hé) are the classic pair for exactly this: one feeds the blood, the other cools and settles the mind.

Ingredients

  • 8–10 dried longan (shelled, or use shelled + pitted)
  • 10–12 dried lily bulbs (bai he)
  • 3 red dates, torn open (optional)
  • 500 ml water

Method

  1. Rinse the longan and lily bulbs.
  2. Add them with the water to a small pot.
  3. Simmer gently 15 minutes until the liquid is faintly sweet and cloudy.
  4. Strain into a mug. Sip warm, an hour or so before bed.

Why it works

Longan has been valued since The Divine Farmer’s Materia Medica (《神农本草经》) for tonifying the heart and spleen and “calming the spirit.” Lily bulb appears throughout Chinese home remedy books as the gentle moistener that takes the edge off a restless, dry, over-heated mind. Together they read less like a sedative and more like a dimmer switch.

When to reach for it

  • When you’re tired but your thoughts won’t slow down at night.
  • After weeks of high-stakes work or constant decisions.
  • During the kind of stress that lives behind your eyes.
  • As a screen-free, caffeine-free evening ritual.

It is a calming ritual, not a treatment. If you have a diagnosed sleep disorder, are pregnant, or take medication, check with your practitioner before making any herb part of your routine.
