Mung-Bean & Lotus-Seed Cooling Tea (Fire)

35 minutes 🍵 4 cups Jin Yang

A gentle, caffeine-free drink for hot days. In five-element food theory, bitter and cooling foods are the traditional counter to summer “heat” — the restless, flushed, can’t-sleep feeling linked with the Fire element.

This is food, not medicine.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp dried mung beans (green)
  • 1 tbsp dried lotus seeds
  • 4 cups water
  • 2–3 dried lily bulbs (optional)
  • A few goji berries to finish

Method

  1. Rinse mung beans and lotus seeds; simmer in water 25–30 minutes until soft.
  2. Add lily bulbs in the last 10 minutes if using.
  3. Strain into a pitcher and cool to room temperature.
  4. Top each glass with a few goji berries.

When to reach for it

Traditional practice pairs this with Fire-time signals: a racing mind at night, feeling overheated, or a flushed, agitated mood in summer. It’s a moment of cool, not a treatment.
